Delivery men

Article Abstract:

There were 33,000 registered midwives in the UK in 1997, with 53 being male. Acceptance of men as midwives has been slow among female midwives, who believe pregnancy and birth should remain a female preserve, although pregnant mothers and their partners appear to have no problems accepting male midwives. Some men become midwives after their own personal experiences of child-birth, with others moving from nursing to midwifery for job satisfaction. The sensitive nature of midwifery should not prevent males from becoming midwives, who believe they are just as capable as their female counterparts.
