Technology transfer and intellectual property: an analysis of the NASA approach

Article Abstract:

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has developed an Intellectual Property Program in line with US government legislation aimed at encouraging the transfer of technology developed in government research and development (R&D) laboratories to the private sector. NASA, which has three R&D centres, encourages technological innovation by offering monetary awards. NASA's licensing program is designed to encourage the effective use of technology developed as a result of NASA-supported R&D. The Intellectual Property Program has, however, not led to any great increase in NASA-generated technology.

A new approach to the identification and selection of international technology transfer modes: logical framework and empirical evidence

Article Abstract:

A new methodology is proposed to enable companies to select the appropriate means to acquire or transfer technology. The approach gives emphasis on the correlation among the basic characteristics of technology transfer and evaluates the meaningfulness of identified factors to identify international technology transfer modes. It allows the transacting firms to shape the transfer mode with respect to specific external and internal conditions and strategic orientations.
