The European electronics industry: technology and structural change
Article Abstract:
The industrial performance of Europe's electronics industry was analyzed. Specific factors such as technological innovations, market share, international competition, internationalization of the industry and the effects of EC industrial policies on European electronics companies were studied. It was revealed that compared to Japanese and US firms, European firms were deficient in marketing and entrepreneurial skills. In the major industry sectors, European firms were weak in computers and semiconductors but were competitive in telecommunications. It was suggested that the EC industrial policies should enhance the competitiveness of its firms.

Innovation in East Asia: diversity and development
Article Abstract:
The 'flying geese' model of A. Kaname and K. Akamatsu attributes economic growth in South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and other East Asian economies to the outflow of Japanese capital and production facilities from Japan due to the yen's appreciation. This model is deficient because it downplays the role of the US as an export market and source of technology, as well as the independent impulses for economic growth in the newly industrializing East Asian countries, which exhibit very diverse paths to economic development.

A comparison of the electronics industry of India and Korea
Article Abstract:
A comparative study of the Indian and Korean electronics industries reveals that India could not develop its electronics industry because of the overemphasis on indigenisation. Moreover, the study reveals that India could develop its software industry and that it cannot hope to develop its electronics industry as Korea did without the support of a strong electronic components industry.
