Nobel Peace Prize awardee Aung San Suu Kyi became a symbol of democratic reform after her return to Burma in Mar 1988. Suu Kyi's party won a landslide victory in the May 1990 elections. Her life prior to her involvement in Burmese politics is discussed.

Menchu, Rigoberta

Guatemalan human rights activist Rigoberta Menchu has worked since 1981 to stop the persecution of Guatemala's indigenous peoples by landowners and the military. She won the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in 1992. Her life and career are profiled.
