Ronald Carey started his five-year term of office on Feb 1, 1992 after being elected by 48% of the 1,600,000 teamster membership. Among his first acts were cutting his salary by $50,000 and selling off luxury teamster property such as limousines, aircraft and a condominium in Puerto Rico.

Walesa, who was born in 1943 in Popowo, Poland, helped end Communist rule in Poland. He received widespread support from the Polish public for his leadership of the labor union Solidarity. One of his major accomplishments was helping Polish workers gain the right to strike.

Hoffa was born in May 19, 1941. He assumed leadership of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in 1958 later negotiated what was to be known as the one of the greatest labor contracts in history, the National Master Freight Agreement.
