The African-American writer Debra Dickerson became a U.S. Air-force Captain in charge of intelligence at an American base in Turkey in 1980. She wrote the book 'An American Story' that traces her life, from her difficult childhood to the point at which she became an independent thinker.

A biography is presented of American author Karen Karbo, who intended to be a dramatic screenwriter, but ended up writing novels, notable for their humour. Her first novel, "Trespassers Welcome Here," was written in 1989, and was well-received by literary critics.
