Sociologist, journalist, and author Donna Gaines' first published book Teenage Wasteland: Suburbia's Dead End Kids (1991) is widely considered a classic in sociology and has also appeared on the reading lists of college courses nationwide. She is an authority on the behavior and emotional lives of teenagers, in particular, suburban teenagers and their feelings of alienation and hopelessness, suicidal impulses and survival tactics.
