McCarthy taught in public schools and was a professor of economics at St. John's University and acting chairman of the Department of Sociology at the college of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. He worked as a senior editor at the publishing firm of Harcourt, Brace, and Jovanovich and at his own writing of poetry, essays and books.
