Australia born Geraldine Brooks decided when she was imprisoned in Nigeria as a foreign correspondent for the 'Wall Street Journal', that if she survived and returned home she would remain there, have a child and write books. Her non-fiction works cover subjects as varied as the interior lives of Islamic women, a reconnection with the pen pals of her childhood, a novel set in the times of the 17th century plague in England while her fictional work 'March' gained her the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

Brooks, Jack

Rep Jack Brooks is one of the most powerful men in Congress and is known for his authorship of several important bills. Born in Louisiana, Brooks' family later moved to Texas, the state which he now represents. After seeing service during World War II, he was elected to the Texas state legislature in 1946, beginning a political career which has lasted up to the present.
