Harold Jaffe's extensive efforts in AIDS research and education have led to various awards. Jaffe's principal work with AIDS started in 1981 with his work at the Centers for Disease Control. He has since become a spokesman for the Center, and is currently deputy director for the HIV/AIDS division.

Varmus was co-winner of the 1989 Nobel Prize in medicine for cancer research. His appointment to the head of NIH was greeted enthusiastically by those wanting a researcher. Others feared he would stress research over practical applications. However, his management of NIH has been praised.
