Leslie Howard Gelb was born on March 4, 1937 in New Rochelle, New York. He had a distinguished career as a federal government official and was a journalist, besides being a staffer with the U.S. Department of Defense in 1967, before he was named president of the Council on Foreign Relations in 1993.
