Article Abstract:

Levi Watkins, born in Parsons, Kansas, on June 13, 1945 is a cardiologist at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. In February 1980, he performed a groundbreaking operation on a 54-year-old California woman who had survived a previous episode of cardiac arrest, by putting in her body an Automatic Implantable Defibrillator (AID), and in 1991 he was named a professor of cardiac surgery, becoming the first African-American person to hold the position at the university.

Elaine L. Chao

Article Abstract:

A biography is presented of Elaine L. Chao, the first Asian-American woman to hold the post of United States Secretary of Labor. Taiwanese-born Chao initiated several important reforms as the president of the US charity organization, the United Way, and also held the position of director of the Peace Corps.
