John Major rose from a school dropout to at 16 to UK Prime Minister and Conservative Party leader in 1990. He was first elected to Parliament in 1979 and rose quickly with the patronage of Prime Minister Margaret thatcher. After enjoying strong ratings at first, his popularity dropped to a historical low, mainly for his support of the European single currency and his handling of coal-mine privatizations.
