Maria Cantwell, a Democrat, won a seat from Washington State in the US Senate after defeating the three-term republican incumbent Slade Gorton on 7th November 2000. She settled in Washington four years after she graduated from college, after helping in the unsuccessful attempt of Senator Alan Cranston of California to win the 1980 Democratic presidential nomination.
