Michael V. Hayden, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency

Michael Vincent Hayden took on an important role in the global war on terrorism when he became director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in May 2006, and also assumed responsibility for restoring the reputation of the federal agency. Hayden is a former intelligence officer in the U.S, Air Force, in which he attained the rank of general, and served as director of the National Security Agency (NSA) from 1999 to 2005 and as the CIA's deputy director in 2005 and 2006.

Janis Karpinski, Former US Army general

Janis Karpinski, a former brigadier general in the US Army, became the first woman in the country's history to command troops in a war zone when she was put in charge of soldiers in Iraq. She also became the highest-ranking officer to be reprimanded in connection with American soldiers' abuse of prisoners at Iraq's Abu Ghraib detention facility, which came to light in the early months of 2004.
