Mike Luckovich has spent 20 years commenting on the American culture and political landscape through the barbed humor of his editorial cartoons. In 2002, after the terrorist attacks on the US but prior to the war in Iraq, his anti-Bush cartoons divided readers equally, with 50 percent of responders in agreement with the cartoonist's opinions and 50 percent holding different views.

Editorialist cartoonist Tony Auth often stirs up controversy with his work, at times drawing criticism from those on opposite sides of the same issue. However, the winner of the 2005 Herblock Prize for editorial cartooning believes his job is not to amuse readers, but to inform and influence them, and to continually hold up the government to a clear-eyed analysis.
