Donna Shirley became the mission analyst for the mariner Venus-Mercury expedition in 1973 and won the NASA Group Achievement Award for the mariner 10 project. Shirley now handles the management of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Mars Exploration project as well as the Pathfinder and the Mars Global Surveyor.

Jackson, Shirley Ann
Article Abstract:
Jackson is one of the most prominent African American scientists in the US. She is the first African-American woman in the US to earn a doctoral degree in physics and also the first African-American to head the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. She graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1973.

Donna de Varona won two Olympic golds in swimming at the age of 17. She served as an adviser to the white house office of national drug control policy under President Bill Clinton in the late 1990s.
