Sweeney, who was born in 1934 in the Bronx, New York, NY, became president of the AFL-CIO in Oct 1995. He helped the Service Employees International Union become the third-largest labor union in the US during his presidency of the New York, NY, union, which lasted from 1980 to 1995.
