Kiss me, stupid: sophistication, sexuality, and 'Vanity Fair.'
Article Abstract:
William Makepeace Thackeray's 'Vanity Fair' criticizes the law and social convention while also indicating Thackeray's longing to be accepted into the snobbery of high society. Thackeray links homosexuality and snobbery through showing both as forbidden desires while also revealing the sexuality that underlies all of society. He condemns those who seek to be accepted above their station and yet admires the perseverance of Becky Sharp who rises above her station then gets away with murdering Jos. Public and private spheres are intertwined through snobs and bon vivants, according to Thackeray.
