Cory Booker
Article Abstract:
A bitter mayoral battle was fought in Newark, New Jersey, in 2002 between four-term incumbent Sharpe James and Cory Booker, who projected himself as a reform-minded candidate promising to reduce crime, improve the city's failing schools and eliminate cronyism and corruption in the city's administration. Booker, a Rhodes Scholar, lawyer and community activist, narrowly lost that election, but in 2006 was elected as the first new mayor of Newark since 1986.
