A mini-guide to philatelic terminology
Article Abstract:
Many stamp collectors do not know the terminology associated with philately and especially terms used to discuss flawed stamps. Definitions of 10 common terms are presented. Among the terms is "offsets on the glue.' This error is a mirror image of the stamp design which shows through to the gummed side.

Condition is an important factor in determining value

The quality of a single stamp, an error, or a collection will be noted when it is being sold. Such factors as the nature of the hinging, or if the stamp has never been hinged are important. Never hinged stamps with orignal glue issued prior to World War II are difficult to find.

There is a difference between postage stamps which contains errors, and ones which are classified as freaks, or oddities. Many mistakes can be made when trying to classify an error by an apparent color mistake. Tips are given on how to determine a true color error in a stamp.
