Basic training for PC generals
Article Abstract:
Wargames position the user as a general in charge of several battlefield units poised to battle an enemy from a third-party view. Electronic Entertainment's Command & Conquer is at the lowest end of the market. It is fairly simple to play, not at all realistic and not based on turn-taking. The same company's Steel Panthers wargame has more detail and a sense of morale, which is rather exceptional in the genre. Its Panzer General is ranked as one of the most impressive wargames ever. It is relatively easy to play, ingeniously executed and only hindered by poor documentation, as is Steel Panthers. The Civil War is at the median for complexity, suffers from minor bugs and lacks impressive battle execution. On the positive side, it is flexible and features an interesting combination of turn-based and real-time action. Battleground Ardennes and D-Day America Invades are very challenging games with the highest level of realism available.

SpaceBucks
Article Abstract:
Sierra On-Line's $59.95 SpaceBucks strategy game combines economic trading elements with a futuristic interstellar civilization fantasy. The goal of the game is to obtain a monopoly on interstellar trade and eliminate the competing companies. In the game, users are provided with a spaceship and a galactic trading license. Based in the year 2500, the game allows users to participate in free-for-all economic mayhem. Users sell different luxury items to five different races of beings, each of which has a unique taste for goods it will pay for. To win the game, users must construct an empire with the correct balance of races, with each race developing goods for another race. The game's strategic features include a stock market, Customer Satisfaction, limited Covert Operations and upgradeable trading ships. Drawbacks include a simple economic model and problematic operation with Windows 95.

Shivers
Article Abstract:
Sierra On-Line's $39.95 Shivers adventure game holds the player's attention as they run around the museum setting collecting jars with which to capture the evil 'ixupi'. Accessing all the jars to capture all the spirits involves solving several puzzles. Sierra's Phantasmagoria is far more gory. Shivers replaces blood and guts with challenging puzzles and intrigue. It uses a Myst-like point-and-click interface, which is not hindered by heavy icons and inventory items. The 'flashback' option reveals a detailed log of all playing action. Game-playing is enhanced by a dazzling musical score, top-notch sound effects and gorgeous hand-drawn graphics.
