Stamp collectors are often disappointed to discover that the EFOs they own are counterfeit or altered in some way. Philatelists have experts such as the American Philatelic Society and the Philatelic Foundation to help them. Even though a certificate from an expert is not free, it is valuable.

A few words about perfins and precancels

People commonly place great monetary value on what they consider rare postage stamp errors. The same may happen with collectors of post cards. Two types of misleading 'errors' are the perfin stamps which have the name of the company that made the perforations, and cards with misplaced stamp.
