Birth of an engine

Article Abstract:

Rudolf Diesel invented the diesel engine in the 1890s, developing components to atomize the fuel and inject into the cylinder and later adding a supercharger. Diesel became wealthy from his invention. He disappeared during a steamship trip in 1913, and his body was never found.

Article Abstract:

New marine diesel engines to be introduced in 1996 include the Alaska Diesel 436-cid L6108A, units with new electronic controls from Caterpillar and six Diamond Performance Series engines from Cummins. A survey of the new offerings from major manufacturers is presented.

Go-fast diesels

Article Abstract:

A number of diesel-powered boats are now offering racing-caliber performance. Most of these high performance boats feature outdrives and surface-piercing Arneson or Trimax drives instead of ordinary propeller-shaft propulsion.
