Building "Be"-tter? Sapphires
Article Abstract:
Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), a sophisticated test to determine the nature of trace elements, has found traces of beryllium (Be), a coloring agent that does not normally occur in sapphires, in only 10 to 35 parts per million. Colored Stone reported in the spring of 2003 that prices for the new orange stones, which started at $150 to $200 per carat, dropped sharply to $50 per carat when news of the diffusion treatment came out.
