Charles Sturt

Charles Sturt navigated the Darling River in Australia in an effort to find the source of the river and a mountain range west of it. Sturt's explorations led to settlements in the Murray Valley area of Australia. The country issued a stamp in honor of his achievements.

Alvaro de Mendana de Neyra
Article Abstract:
Alvaro de Mendana was a 16th-century Spanish explorer and the first white man to discover the Solomon Islands. The islands issued a stamp in his honor in 1992. He was looking for Australia, but encountered hostile natives and was driven to North America.

Pedro Alvares Cabral
Article Abstract:
Cabral was born in Portugal and sailed west in 1500 to what is present-day Brazil in search of a better route to India. He claimed Brazil for Portugal and continued sailing to India, where he secured a treaty to trade spices.
