Collectors ignored postal markings for generations
Article Abstract:
An example of how covers were ignored is the case in Iceland. Stamps from the past were carefully preserved but all were soaked off the envelops and few if any remain today. Millions of rare stamp covers have been destroyed globally. Now the interest in covers is as popular as stamp collecting.

Sending a letter is taken for granted
Article Abstract:
A description of the mechanics of early US postage service, local, interstate and foreign, is presented. The varying rates for foreign postage was often caculated on political or social grounds. Color was a clue to rates too. Some rare collectibles stem from these odd rates.

Check postmark dates for important events

A knowledge of postal history can alert a collector when something that looks ordinary is really an unusual find. The stamps and cover may be valuable in a monetary way, or the significant of the date may be important in the history of philately. Several examples are given.
