Cover gives clues about 61st U.S. Colored Infantry
Article Abstract:
"The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies" provided data on the colored Civil War regiment name found on the old envelop. Name changes for the regiment made the search difficult. The obscure date on the cover was found to be 1885. The addressee, Capt Riggs must still be researched.

Condition of civil war patriotics
Article Abstract:
Covers issued during the American Civil War depict either Confederate andUnion slogans, battle scenes or propaganda, and are fascinating to collect. Confederate covers are rarer, and usually in poorer condition than Union covers. Techniques on preserving the covers are presented.

Postage stamps in collections should be protected from light in order to preserve the colors and shape of the stamps. Stamp exhibitions use ceiling lights to protect, yet allow viewing of, the stamps. Other techniques to protect stamps are presented.
