Lee Downey, a designer of fossil ivory carvings in Bali, Indonesia, started as a silversmith with a capital provided by a hippie he met on the bus. In the late 1970s, Downey found himself making trips to California, India and at Tampak Siring in Indonesia where he was taught the art of carving.
