In the days before the "penny black."(origin of the postage stamp)(Column)
Article Abstract:
Sir Rowland Hill is recognized as the inventor of the postage stamp. It was his 1840 'Penny Black' and pre-payment scheme that saved the British Postal Service. Other claims to the distinction come from Scotland, Sardinia, New South Wales, Greece and Sweden in the early 1800s, and 17th-century Venice.
