Lapis Judaicus: the Jews' stone
Article Abstract:
Lapis judaicus, which is Latin for Judean stone, are the fossil spines of sea urchins and are mainly made of calcium carbonate or calcite. The fossils are usually club shaped, would sometimes have traces of magnesium, and each spine is crystallographically a single crystal. Other features of lapis judaicus, and its history, are discussed.
