Microsoft buys into the Web
Article Abstract:
Microsoft CEO Bill Gates is linking all of his company's products, including The Microsoft Network (MSN), to the Internet because he believes a connection to the online community will increase the company's profits. MSN, Microsoft's version of America Online, is striving to offer the most color, best graphics and a widespread range of entertainment features. For example, MSN will soon feature most of NBC's entertainment offerings, and currently boasts an online version of USA Today, ESPN sports programming and basketball star Shaquille O'Neal's Shaq World Web site. Microsoft also is developing an online political magazine that will be managed by political insider Michael Kinsley. However, Microsoft will have to charge user access fees to pay for its high profile entertainment. As more companies begin to charge for online services, the Web may be divided into sites that are free and sites that charge admission.

CD-ROMs go online
Article Abstract:
The online versions of eight CD-ROM reference titles are reviewed. Microsoft's Encarta 96 is significantly better than its two rivals, Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia 1996 and the 1996 Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia. Encarta offers excellent integration of disc-based content with updates; an update file posted each month covers news and events and adds 40 to 50 new articles, some with graphics. Microsoft Music Central includes references to 60,000 albums, song clips and video clips; a single recent update added information on over 280 new albums. The Microsoft Cinemania 96 movie reference has 24,000 film listings; the updates are mostly text with a few movie stills. Among the best special-interest titles is Popular Mechanics CarGuide from Hearst New Media/Books That Work.

I like to watch
Article Abstract:
The Web is inundated with sites that consist solely of views from video cameras. Video camera sites can take Web surfers almost anywhere, from viewing the weather conditions in Colorado to observing the activities of a pet iguana. Such Web sites enable high-tech exhibitionists to show themselves to the world, and each must be judged on its own merits. Even so, the value of some sites is questionable. For example, a site called The Nadir Of Western Civilization As We Know It allows surfers to watch the growth spurts of a Chia Pet. Another site allows viewers to monitor the drinking habits of Columbia Univ students by viewing a pair of soda vending machines. Users interested in finding such 'Netcam' sites should utilize Anthony's List of Internet-Accessible Sites.
