Midwest Slope challenge: Soarers kick back in Kansas

Article Abstract:

The eleventh consecutive outing of the Lincoln (NE) Area Soaring SocietyEs (LASSEs) Midwest Slope Challenge (MWSC), the longest-running slope-racing event in the US is held on 13 to 16 May 2004 at Wilson Lakes in Lucas, Kansas. The One-Design Race (ODR) specification is developed by the Torrey Pines Gulls Soaring Club to keep down the cost of a racing sailplane.

Soaring in the heartland: the 1998 Midwest Slope Challenge

The 1998 Fifth Lincoln Area Soaring Society Midwest Slope Challenge, held at Wilson Lake site in Kansas, attracted the best in foam aircraft combat flying and slope racing. The site offers the terrain slope and wind best suited for model aircraft flying.

A description is presented of the sport of slope racing which is popular with many model airplane enthusiasts. Advice is given on the selection of a sailplane suitable for slope racing purposes. Race strategy is discussed.
