Mortal Kombat 3
Article Abstract:
GT Interactive's Mortal Kombat 3 (MK3) is the champion of the PC fighting ring with its fast-paced action, impressive animation and hearty sounds. MK3 matches, and possibly surpasses, the allure of the arcade version with its flexibility and enhanced features. There is a plethora of characters, each with his or her own special moves that enhance the traditional Kombat moves. Mastering the characters' various special moves is the players' key to victory. Specific combinations performed after the "Finish Him" command result in particularly gory fatalities. MK3 includes Kombat Kodes, which are symbols that can initiate a variety of effects. One of the best features is the ability to play MK3 over a Novell IPX LAN. The program also includes a wide variety of difficulty settings, so a player of any level has a chance to win.

Four on a match
Article Abstract:
Several companies and industry groups have released software that helps users determine whether a game or multimedia title will be compatible with a particular computer. The Interactive Multimedia Association's ambitious CD Match program is twofold: the free CD MATCH utility checks a PC's configuration and prints out specifications for the user to take to the store and match to lists of requirements on software packaging, and software developers are encouraged to develop a uniform labeling system to make the printout useful. Blockbuster Video's PC MatchMaker costs $10 and is available free when the user rents a CD-ROM at any of Blockbuster's stores. It analyzes system configuration and checks for compatibility with the rental chain's own inventory of CD titles; the company plans updates at 60- to 90-day intervals.
