Mother of all pearls
Article Abstract:
The use of pearls in making jewelry, in medicine, and as tools, is discussed. Nacre is used for mother-of-pearl buttons, and men's shirts had nacre buttons before World War II. Nacre from the black pearl oyster was also found to induce the growth of osteoblasts in mice. In jewelry, nacre is used for beads called nuclei, which are usually implanted in pearl oysters. The properties of pearls are also presented.
