Boatowners who wish to navigate with an onboard computer need to have five packages. Three hardware packages are needed: a computer, an inverter and a GPS receiver/position locator. As for software, the two packages required would be a navigation program and CD-ROMs filled with relevant charts.

High technology autopilots are now capable of automatically guiding any type of vessel. Most autopilots learn through experience or by 'fuzzy logic' and amazingly compensate for windage, trim and sea state. Most modern autopilot sensors are equipped with automatic deviation controls.
