Polar jade
Article Abstract:
A popular jade carver relates his mining experience at the Polar jade and Kutcho mines in the Cassiar Mountains of British Columbia. The Polar jade mine produces the world's greenest and hardest carving nephrite. Kutcho's jade are more attractive and are usually mottled with chromium and reminiscent of Cassiar.

Atop the Andes: mining Chile's mountain-high lapis
Article Abstract:
The newest lapis lazuli mine is found in the Chilean Andes. Operated by LapisChile S.A., the mine started operations in Jan. 1996. The company's plans include changing the market image of Chilean lapis as the cheap kind and selling more large pieces for carving.

Jaded perspective
Article Abstract:
The signing of the Kachin truce in Burma was significant because it did not only free soldiers but also enabled thousands of workers to move northward and engage in mining jade, rubies and sapphires. Workers were given the chance to earn about $2 a day.
