Generator manufacturers of the 1990s have designed marine diesel and gas generator sets that operate quietly, require little maintenance and come in more compact sizes. Some of these labeled 'sociable' gensets are Kohlers' 8EOZ and 32EOZ and Onan's MDKAA 10-kW@60Hz and MDKAB 12.5-kW@60-Hz.

Designer Adam Erdberg of Tempest Engineering has created a 425-horsepower diesel engine weighing just 290 pounds that moves a 27-foot boat at 70 mph. The Tempest XPE-27 is a modified helicopter jet engine that runs on regular diesel fuel.

Some companies modify automotive or industrial engine blocks so that they can be used in boats. Peninsular Diesel modifies GM truck engines by adding parts such as pistons, a fuel-injection pump and a turbocharger/aftercooler system.
