Preventing corrosion

The galvanic corrosion common on boats can lead to serious problems. Corrosion can be prevented by avoiding the use of dissimilar metals unless insulated, using corrosion-resistant metals, using coatings and using corrosion inhibitors and sacrificial zinc anodes.

A mild powdered household cleaner or detergent is a good choice for cleaning the teak trim on boats. Care must be taken when using two-part abrasive teak cleaners. After cleaning teak can be protected with varnish or with penetrating sealers and oils.
