Sir Humphrey Gilbert
Article Abstract:
Gilbert claimed the Canadian island of Newfoundland in Aug 1583 for England. Canada and Newfoundland issued stamps in honor of his discovery in 1983 and 1933. Gilbert died when his ship sank on his return to England after his discovery.

Lorenzo de'Medici
Article Abstract:
De'Medici ruled Florence, Italy, in the 1400s, during the Italian Renaissance. He was a great patron of the arts and humanists. Italy issued a stamp in Apr 1992 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of his death.
