Smoke signals

The color of excess diesel smoke provides clues to its cause. Continuous white smoke indicates that fuel is not being ignited while blue smoke points to excess lube oil in the engine. Black or gray smoke is caused by problems with air intake and exhaust backpressure.

The water pump impellers should be removed from a diesel engine before a boat is stored for the winter. Fresh coolant should be added to prevent engine damage, the lube oil should be changed and the sacrificial zincs should be replaced.
