Teles & zooms
Article Abstract:
Zoom lenses, especially those that can extend to the 200mm focal length, have created endless opportunities for photographers who cannot or do not want to get near their subjects. The regular telephoto lens in a single focal length is still superior at 300mm or higher because of a larger available aperture.

SLR: do you need big aperture teles to make subjects pop out?
Article Abstract:
Many photographers unnecessarily carry 6.5 lb, 9.5 inch single-focal-length 300 mm f/2.8 lenses when a much smaller and lighter f/4.5 to 5.6 zoom lens would do the job just as well. The differences between the two lenses are described.
