Rockhounding is a popular but burdensome undertaking in the Ukraine and other parts of the former Soviet Union. It is a difficult endeavor requiring days to reach the mineral sites while bearing heavy backpacks. Lapidary and field equipment are not available so enthusiasts have had to design their own.

'Spanish Diggings' in east-central Wyoming has changed in the last 50 years. What was in the very beginning a Plains Indians sanctuary where all were allowed to collect stones, has now lost its significance, its stones are almost quarried to depletion.

An agate & amethyst vacation: who knows how many other gemstone mines in northern Ontario are just waiting to be discovered?
Article Abstract:
A family camping trip to Thunder Bay, Ontario, to visit the Thunder Bay Agate Mine is described. The mine is open to tourists, and rockhounds are encouraged to mine their own agate. Ontario also has silver and amethyst mines.
