Vitus Bering

Vitus Bering was commissioned by the Russian czar Peter the Great to lead several expeditions to Siberia and what is now Alaska in the 1700s. His native Denmark issued a stamp in recognition of his achievements, which are described.

Sir Humphrey Gilbert
Article Abstract:
Both Canada and Newfoundland issued postage stamps in honor of Gilbert, whose third attempt to discover a northwest passage led to his claiming Newfoundland for England in 1583. Gilbert died on the return trip.
