Borates can be used to deter the natural enemies of wood like powder-post beetles, house borers, carpenter ants, termites, fungi, mildew and fire and protect the wood from damage. Builders and homeowners can stop the damage done to the existing wood by applying borates and materials that have built-in borate protection can be used for preventing infestation or decay.

Organic Gardening took soil samples from the ground under wood playground equipment and rubbed a handkerchief on the wood that had been pressure treated and not pressure treated to assess any environmental risks. Tests showed the treated wood had high levels of arsenic that could harm children.
