New executive order overhauls system: new security classifications

Article Abstract:

Executive Order No. 12958 significantly restructures the federal security classification system. Issued by Pres. Clinton in 1995, the order is expected to result in the release of formerly classified national security information and to make classification of new information more difficult. For the first time, federal agencies will be compelled to justify the continued classification of records. Failure to do so leads to automatic declassification. This means that most newly classified information will be declassified after 10 years.
