All-American mallows: hibiscuses and their many comely American cousins add vibrant colors to summer gardens

Several varieties of hibiscus and other members of the mallow family can be grown in non-tropical areas of the United States. Certain varieties, such as swamp hibiscus and rose mallow, prefer wetland areas in the East and in California's Central Valley. Other varieties thrive in the desert areas of the Southwest.
