Arilbred irises: the last half-century of breeding has produced exquisite, adaptable hybrids
Article Abstract:
Arilbred irises, hybrids of the delicate and hard-to-grow aril iris and the hardier bearded iris, produce lovely blooms and are adaptable to many drier climates. Early attempts at these iris hybrids were largely unsuccessful, but modern innovations in crossbreeding have produced a strong plants in a variety of beautiful colors. Though popular in southwestern parts of the US, many iris growers are either unaware of these hybrids or mistakenly believe the flowers are as delicate as pure arils.
