Celebrating the tomato

Tomatoes have emerged as an integral part in American culture and cuisine is evident in the many regional celebrations held in its honor each summer, in particular the eBrandywineE, which produces large, beefsteak-style tomatoes. Tomatoes are a valuable commercial crop, a favorite of backyard gardeners and are touted, ironically, for their health benefits as rich sources of antioxidants as well as vitamins A and C.

Abundant basil

The various basils, members of the mint family, have originated in India and Southeast Asia but are now widely grown in gardens everywhere, usually as annual herbs started from the seed. Basil is best harvested just before flowering and the most flavor is packed on tender stems that have not gone woody.
