Gardeners begin during winter to order seeds and develop plans for summer gardening. The seed industry, which began in 1784 with the establishment of Landreth Seed Co., has grown to include multiple varieties of popular fruits and vegetables. Mesclun and Phlox of Sheep are two unusual seed varieties.

Planning a vegetable garden may start in January with the arrival of the first seed catalogs. Last year's leftover seeds should be considered before making the final order. Short season seeds such as spinach should not be ruled out, since a second crop can be planted.

Hardy leeks
